At Thompson Family Dental, Doctor Thompson, a dentist in aloha, always says that the real oral care health starts at home. The more you do to be proactive about your teeth-health the better your dentist office visits will usually go. Taking care of yourself is not just about eating right and exercising, although those are important, your oral care is just as important. Here are easy tips to help you care for your teeth at home.

Get Great Toothpaste

We all know that brushing your teeth at least twice a day is an important part of taking care of your teeth but make sure you actually enjoy your toothpaste. Some toothpaste has different types of consistency. Do you prefer paste or gels? What about the flavor of the toothpaste do you like cinnamon or refreshing mint? It is important to try new toothpaste before you settle on just one type. If you don’t love your toothpaste it may make brushing your teeth not as fun or tasty.

Take Your Time

When you brush your teeth make sure you take your time. The benefits of brushing your teeth aren’t just with the toothpaste. In fact it is the abrasive scrubbing from the bristles that helps remove stubborn food particles that get stuck in your teeth. Doctor Thompson recommends that you brush your teeth for at least 3 minutes. Most electric toothbrushes are programed to brush for 3 minutes.

Use the Proper Equipment

When you brush your teeth use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Make sure it fits your mouth comfortably. Consider using a battery-operated or electronic toothbrush, especially if you have health issues such as arthritis or other problems that make it difficult to brush effectively.

Keep Clean Equipment

Make sure you always rinse your toothbrush out with water after brushing. Store your toothbrush in an upright position, if possible, and allow it to air dry until next time. Do not cover your toothbrush or store it in closed containers, which can encourage the growth of bacteria. When you travel make sure you leave it out to air dry. Replace your tooth brush every 3-4 months as well. This will reduce the bacteria build up and help prevent your mouth from unwanted issues, such as cavities.

Eat Well

Sure you hear it from your doctor, an apple a day will keep him away, but eating healthy is also good for your oral health. Pick foods that are fresh and full of fiber and calcium rich composites, such as dairy, milk and leafy greens. These foods help cleanse the mouth so you will be smiling bright from the inside out.
